There are two ways to reach Nusa Penida and three routes once you land. Shared speedboats cross from Sanur or Serangan in around 45 minutes; a private boat from our own fleet makes the Serangan crossing in about 40 minutes on your schedule, from USD 990.90 per day. On the island, the classic choice is the West route (Kelingking, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Crystal Bay), the East route (Diamond Beach, Atuh, Thousand Islands viewpoint, Tree House) or a combo day that samples both. This section maps all of it in English; our Indonesian guides linked below go deeper on every stop.
| Route | Signature stops | By shared speedboat + island car | By private boat / yacht |
|---|---|---|---|
| West Nusa Penida | Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Crystal Bay | Fixed crossing times; island car tour follows the crowd flow | Depart on your clock, reach Kelingking’s viewpoint before the tour buses, add a Crystal Bay snorkel from the boat |
| East Nusa Penida | Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, Thousand Islands viewpoint, Tree House | Longer island drive; best with an early crossing | Boat repositions while you tour, cutting backtracking on the island’s rough roads |
| Combo West + East | The highlights of both coasts in one long day | Possible but rushed on shared schedules | Realistic: a 40-minute private crossing at dawn buys the extra hours the combo needs |
The honest trade-off: shared speedboats are the economical seat and run all day, while a private boat is a different product — your departure time, your route order, snorkeling straight off the transom, and 12–14 guests maximum. Our fleet’s published USD day rates are fixed and public: Angels Yacht (13 guests) USD 990.90, Riki J Yacht (14 guests) USD 993.60, Sea Dragon speedboat (12 guests) USD 997.65, all with captain, crew and fuel. Both formats are bookable here — the private trip and share trip pages carry the current land-tour packages.
From Serangan harbour the Sea Dragon makes Nusa Penida in roughly 40 minutes; public fast boats from Sanur advertise a similar 45-minute run — our Indonesian explainer on reaching Nusa Penida in 45 minutes walks through harbours, timetables and what the crossing feels like on a normal day. Mornings are calmer almost year-round; if a smooth ride matters to your group, take the first departure and keep the afternoon flexible. Wondering about the geography first? Yes, Nusa Penida is part of Bali’s Klungkung regency — same province, very different island.
First-timers usually take the West route — our West tour destination guide covers each stop — while returning visitors head east with the East tour guide. Snorkelers should read the rundown of the island’s best snorkeling spots and pair the tour with a boat-side session at Crystal Bay; beach collectors can rank their targets with the best beaches guide and the classic nine most popular sights. If you only have one day, this one-day itinerary shows what actually fits; how many days you need answers whether to stay over, and the best time to visit settles the season question. Budget planners can see a full cost breakdown, independent travellers can weigh going without a tour, and anyone torn between clifftops can consult Uluwatu vs Nusa Penida.
Beyond the checklist stops: couples have a dedicated guide to romantic things to do, families one for a family day on the island, and thrill-seekers can read about bungee jumping at Kelingking or wind down at a Penida beach club. The full activities overview ties it together. Crossing to the neighbouring island? Our English guide to Devil’s Tears on Nusa Lembongan covers the strait’s most dramatic viewpoint, and the wider Bali boat tours hub maps every route our boats run. Multi-day charters east of Bali operate through our group fleet at Komodo Luxury.
Three vessels run the private crossings, and the choice is mostly about group shape. The Sea Dragon — a 12-metre twin-outboard speedboat for up to 12 guests at USD 997.65 — is the pace-setter: the roughly 40-minute Serangan run, quick repositioning between bays, and the boat to pick when the plan is packed. Angels Yacht (13 guests, USD 990.90) and Riki J Yacht (14 guests, USD 993.60) trade a little speed for deck space and comfort — better for families with small children, long lunches at anchor and groups that treat the crossing as part of the day rather than a transfer. All three sail with captain, crew and fuel included, and all three can hold a snorkeling stop at Crystal Bay or Gamat Bay without renegotiating the day.
West: Kelingking’s T-rex ridge is the island’s signature view and the reason to arrive early — the viewpoint is quiet at 8 a.m. and shoulder-to-shoulder by 11. Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach sit five minutes apart and share one parking area, which is why every itinerary pairs them; Crystal Bay closes the loop as the swim-and-sunset stop. East: Diamond Beach’s carved staircase and Atuh’s amphitheatre bay reward the longer drive with a fraction of the west’s crowds, and the Thousand Islands viewpoint above Atuh is the single best photograph most visitors take home. The Tree House perched on the same ridge is small, famous and best treated as a two-minute photo stop rather than a destination.
The dry months from April to November give the calmest crossings and the clearest snorkeling water; July and August bring the biggest crowds to the west-coast icons, which strengthens the case for a private dawn departure or an east-route day. The wet season still runs — mornings are usually workable and the island is at its greenest — but build slack into the plan and let the captain call the sea state. Our Indonesian guide to the best visiting window breaks this down month by month.
By shared fast boat from Sanur (about 45 minutes) or by private boat from Serangan (about 40 minutes with our fleet). Private departures run on your schedule rather than a timetable.
Published day-charter rates are USD 990.90–997.65 depending on the vessel, including captain, crew and fuel, for up to 12–14 guests.
West for the icons — Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Crystal Bay. East for fewer crowds and Diamond Beach’s staircase. A private-boat combo day covers both if you start early.
Yes — Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay and Manta Bay are regular snorkeling stops, easiest done straight from a private boat between land stops.
One well-planned day covers one coast comfortably or a combo at a brisk pace. Two days let you do both coasts properly plus a snorkeling session.
Yes. Crossings run year-round with morning departures the calmest; captains make the final call in rough weather and rebook rather than push a bad crossing.
